I'm leaving for Hawaii on Monday and have been searching for
months for some design I could use at least as a starting point
to give to the tattoo artist in Oahu. Not only were any images
difficult to find online
and in books, the designs I did find didn't come close to what
I wanted. I was really resigned to the fact that I would have
to start from scratch and hope I could explain the design in

I waited for over 10 years to get my first tattoo
because I was afraid of doing it "wrong." I looked
at art on the internet and in several different
tattoo shops, and although I found some things that
looked okay, there was never anything I wanted just
like it was. Besides I never wanted to meet someone
who said, "Oh, I have that exact tattoo!" I am not
an artist and wasn't able to redraw anything and it
was difficult to describe some of the changes I was
thinking about. I would have liked to change designs
in several different ways and look at each before I
decided which way I liked best. There are no artists
who want to redraw something in several variations
while you mull it over, knowing that you may not
decide on any of them.
Finally, I found the CreateaTattoo website. I
spent a couple of weeks going through different
tattoos. I narrowed it down to just a few choices
almost immediately, then did several variations of
each choice. I was able to print out various
pictures at the size I wanted and hang them around
so that I could see them better. I also had someone
trace the template with a black pen on my lower back
so that I could see what it might look like and to
make sure I really liked it.
Within a month, I had the perfect template and had
set up an appointment with a tattoo artist. When I
arrived with the template, we made a few more small
changes and a week later I had my perfect tattoo -

about the piece. And I felt like part of the process
the whole way - from conceptualizing the piece,
through all of the changes, all the way to the
